When I open print management either on a 2003 R2 or Vista machine, I can add
print servers and see their drivers, ports etc. but not any printers. I can
add a printer and it will show up and work on the print server but the
remote print management machine won't show that printer it just added.

I have disabled the firewall, any other reasons why all these other details
work but not the actual printers?

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

Based on my test, this is an expected result, it is a by design feature.
After adding Pinter Server in Print Management, the printer install on
Printer Server should be added manually.

Thanks & Regards,

Eh? In order to see a print queue I need to add the printers individually?
If I right click on Printers and click add printer, it starts the wizzard to
add a printer to the server. I don't want to add new printers, I want to
manage those that are already there. You know, just like the screen shots
in the word doc show. You know, just like the local printers on the machine
running the print management.

Hello,

As the Whitepaper indicates, in order to get PMC working, you will have to
have permissions for Administrator of remote computer. If you are not, you
will see mixed behaviours. If you are in domain environment, you can add
your account to the Domain Admins; if you are not, you have to set the
password of local Administrator to the same with remote Print Server, then
use Administrator to logon and manager the remote Print Server.

I tested in a Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2 as a Printer Server, that is
work fine.

I have a domain account that is in the local admin group on each machine.
Are you saing that my domain account must be a member of the Domain Admins
group?

Hello,

You only have the Admin permissions on remote computer. I would like to
confirm whether the remote computer is joined to the domain. If not,
recommend you join the computer to the domain, to see if the problem
persists.

Please help to do a test:
1. Open Computer Management.
2. Right-click left panel Computer Management, select Connect to another
computer, type remote comuter name or IP address.
3. Expand the Event Viewer or Devices Manager, to check if you can view the
information of the remote computer.

Note: this procedure is similar to Print Management managers remote Printer
Server.

Thanks & Regards,

Yes I am an admin on both systems. I can remote manage and do anything else
I need to.

Hello,

From your post, it seems to be ok. Before performing further
troubleshooting, I would like to confirm with you the following things:

1. What is the OS version of the Printer Server?
2. When you open Print Management console on Windows Server 2003 R2 or
Windows Vista, there is a Local Printer Server. Please expand the Local
Printer Server\Printers, to see if you can see those printers installed
locally. Could you send the screenshot to me?
3. Open Print Management console on Windows Server 2003 R2 or Windows
Vista, expand Printers\all Printers, to see if you can see the printers.

Please help me to do a test (note: the user needs local administrator
permissions):

1. Open Print Management console on Windows Server 2003 R2.
2. In the Print Management tree, right-click ServerName (local), click
Automatically Add Network Printers, and then click Start to automatically
locate and install printers found on this server's local subnet. To see if
there are some error appear.

Thanks & Regards,

Mike Luo
