Quick Talk Talk Question

I just gave a Linksys WAG354G to a colleague to use in place of his USB
modem as he wants to go wireless. He just called me to say it's not working.

After a conversation it turns out he's using Talk Talk. The router was
working fine when I used it so I was wondering: do Talk Talk restric the
use of non-Talk Talk supplied equipment, like Sky do?

Define 'not working'. What part of the whole thing, PC settings,
connections, router settings etc... stops it from working?

Neither Sky nor TT prevent you using any other equipment. They make it
harder for you to do so than soe other ISP's, but they don;t prevent
it.

Hmm guess I could have been more specific... DSL light is on, internet
light is off, username and Talk Talk username and password are correct
(according to him), using the wizard on the CD the router reports
'cannot connect to internet' or somesuch. Same if he manually edits the
settings via the router config page.

He got the same result a while ago with another router, which leads me
to believe it is either Talk Talk preventing him from using other
routers (?) or user error (could be likely).

I've got him to take the router round to a friend's and try it on their
(different ISP) BB, with their settings.

Well no, but e.g. Sky don't give out the username/password IIRC

My router has a push button icon to auto configure and detect parameters
Connection Type
VPI value
Encapsulation type
Modulation
Authentication type
Choose IP address static or automatic
Finally after digesting things it said don't forget to
enter your username and password.
When the paperwork arrived about a week after I started
using it, I found that the settings it had divined matched
the ISP's.
So I guess your friend may need to put in some parameters.

No, that's why they don't make it easy. It is easy enough to find out
what they are though after a few minutes with Google and some playing
with the router.

Yes this is a good point; the configuration CD has a dialogue which has
that icon, only it's not detecting the settings for his ISP for some
reason. I guess I'll just have to go and have a look at it which might
not be easy seeing as he's on the other side of the country...

Mine settled after much deliberation for
Connection type PPPoA
VPI value 0
VCI value 38
Encapsulation type VC-MUX
Modulation G.DMT
Authentication type CHAP
It's a static IP address which AFAIR it found for itself
Then all it needed was user name and password.
If this helps any, but of course this may only apply
to a specific ISP, or your router might be pre-configured with
firmware to tie you to a specific ISP.
Problem with TT seems to be that you can reach some URL's
but not others, pathping points to shiddy routers, if I set up
a VPN to the States, the missing URL's are there, close the
VPN they are gone. Suspect routers are Denver and Brussels,
Googled for the full router names, seems they are known
problems. TT news server seemed a joke. Customer service
not so hot. Guess you get what you pay for.
Wasn't TT on Watchdog a few times? Sort of we
can't cope but we are trying (or hoping) to fix it one day.
