I recently had to reformat the drives on my laptop (that connected via
802.11g) and desktop (that is connected via ethernet cable to the wireless
router on port 4).

I did some cleaning and unplugged the cables, thinking that plugging them
back up shouldn't be too much of a hassel. Boy was I wrong.

Components:

SpeedStream 5360 ADSL modem connected via ethernet to port 3 on the MS
router (I cannot get an internet connection when this cable is plugged up to
the modem port).

Win XP home desktop PC connected via ethernet cable port 4 on the MS router.

My two questions are:

Why can't I plug the ethernet cable going from the ADSL modem to the modem
port on the router?

Secondly...with this setup the Microsoft Broadband Networking Setup wizard
cannot see the modem, so I'm assuming this is where the problem is. Am I
correct?

Do any of the cables need to be crossover?

Who is your ISP?

Which do you use for your connection PPPoE, PPPoA, Dynamic, Static, or
something else? (You may have to call your ISP to find out this answer.)

What firmware version are you running on the MN-700?

Did you run through the wizard again when you installed the BNU on the
desktop computer? (A google of "site:support.microsoft.com BNU" without
the quotes of course will tell you what the BNU is.)

If you answer those four questions we can help you better.

The Modem port on the MN-700 does have an auto detect as to if it needs
to be crossover of not, I'm not 100% sure about the LAN ports though, I
think they don't do that, but as I said I'm not 100% sure. The software
is only needed to configure the MN-700 initially & to configure wireless
connections on versions of Windows that don't have built in wireless
support. Windows XP is the first version of Windows that has wireless
support built in, so the software is not needed in those conditions.

I just wish that Siemens made it easier to look up information about
your DSL modem. That made it hard for me to check if the SpeedStream
5360 was just a bridge or if it is a router. It turns out that it is
just a bridge.

If your question is worth asking, it's worth posting.

If it’s not worth posting you should have done a search on
http://www.google.com/ http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q= or
http://news.google.com/froogle?hl=en&tab=nf&ned=us&q= before wasting our
time.

If I sound hostile or arrogant you need to read the following before
posting a question "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way" at
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html (The site I've linked
to just has this article I think people should read before posting a
technical question.)

PPPoE; see my notes below regarding version numbers

Yes, the results have been the same. I can't install/access the Base
Management software.

Now for something even more peculiar. The BNU update utility has been
downloading/installing updates and is now running into problems. It's saying
it can't update the following components:

boot firmware v 2.0.8.333 attempting to upgrade to 2.1.2.590
runtime firmware v 2.0.8.333 attempting to upgrade to 2.1.2.590

The software version did update however.
application software v 2.2.0.731 up to date.

Well here is my set of ideas for this point.

The default address for the MN-700 is http://192.168.2.1 it also has a
name to reference it which I don't know the default value as I never
bought a MN-700 & I never tried to look it up either.

1) download the update from the following link.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814445

2) Disconnect the DSL modem from the MN-700.

3) Try to sign into the MN-700.

4) If 3 doesn't work do a factory reset, otherwise go to step 5. (The
power light needs to blink amber & green, not just amber) (You need to
be 100% sure that you know the settings before doing this as it will
kick you off of the Internet until you fix it)

5) install the update you downloaded in step 1

6) Configure Internet Explorer to never dial a connection.

7) If you did step 4 sign into the MN-700 & reconfigure it to use PPPoE
along with your wireless security & any other settings that were lost in
the factory reset.

No problem. I guess it just had some setting messed up. So the
firmware upgrade installed & you were able to get back on the Internet
using the modem port of the MN-700 then?
