Question For Router Experts

All:

I'm using a Linkys DSL/Cable router that has limited security and doesn't do
port translation. I've got a P2P client application, two instances of
which sit behind the router. One client attempts to contact the other
client using the known external IP address but the second client fails to
receive the message. The communication is successful, however, with the
router in the DMZ.

I was curious if routers somehow restrict the sending of messages to the
origination IP address, and if not, what do you suppose is blocking the
communication?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Steve

dude? How would you suppose the router should route that packet? I am
sure you told the router exactly which computer to router all p2p
traffic too right? So how can it then route messages to two different
places when its told to route only to one?

<snip>

How would you suppose the router should route that packet?

>>> Thanks for your response CL. Here is my view of what I would expect to

occur:

(Let's say that 2 clients on same computer sit behind same router having
external IP address N):

- Client 2 (NortY) sends Client 1 (NortX) an external message request
thus clearing port Y on the router for incoming data
- Client 1 sends external message from port X to Client 2 at NortY
- Router sees incoming message from NortX and routes the message to portY

>>> No special configurations have been made.

So how can it then route messages to two different places when its told to
route only to one?

>>> Before we get to the two machine scenario I'd like to understand the one

machine scenario described above.
