Question Re Filters

Broadband is coming in February to my exchange. I have a question re the
number of filters I need.

The main socket comes into my lounge. Hardwired into it is the extension
that goes into my study where the ADSL modem will be. Obviously I will need
a filter/splitter in the study so I can have a phone and ADSL Modem.

Plugged INTO the main socket is a socket doubler. Into one socket is plugged
a phone. Into the other socket there is plugged an extension cable that runs
round the room to the back of my sky box. This terminates in another socket
with another doubler in. Into one is plugged my sky box, into the other is
plugged another sky box in my sons bedroom. (I hope this all makes sense!)

Can I simply plug one filter into the main socket and plug the rest into
that or do I need a filter each for both sky boxes and the phone?

Also when I order broadband should I unplug the sky boxes whilst the line is
tested?

As you say in the study the phone in the study will have to be filtered.
If I understand your description correctly you need the socket doubler
going into the main box filtering.

The way I remember this is that all conventional telephone equipment (
phone, fax, SKY box, dial up modem etc ) must connect back to the
exchange through a filter. The ADSL modem must not go through a
filter or can go through the ADSL side of a filter/splitter.

That's what I've done (but only one Sky box, now disconnected as it is
past the 12 months), but use something more expensive than an Ebuyer
125p (or whatever they're charging now!) filter and be prepared to
buy another (eg D-Link at about a tenner) if need be. Peter M

Or try an ebuyer filter, snip the green wire and save nine quid if you find
it works just fine like mine.

Just that I can detect a slight hiss with my Ebuyer filters, but none
with the original that came with the frog (Excelsus I think). Given
the OP plans to feed lots of kit from one filter, if it is poor, it
would affect far more than one phone, so ideally a spare would be
useful for the household... Peter

Thanks for that. Must admit I haven't bothered to open them up - some out
on loan anyway... hmmm, time to say "buy your own" :-) Peter M.
