Question about Pinging

When you try to ping a computer, lets say "ping computer1", if the
computer doesn't exist on the network it says it could not find host. I
have a computer that when you ping it it lists the ip address and then
reports if it was able to connect. My problem is that the computer (call it
cpmuter2) that that I am trying ping should not exist on the network. At
one time it did but I deleted everything I could find about that computer
account and restarted the computer. Is it DNS that tells the ping command
what IP address to us? Does this mean that somewhere in DNS there is still
a record for computer2? Please help.

Mike

yes that's most likely
anything making address resolution my cause this.
could be also wins if you use it, or even hosts or lmhosts

WINS.

If you are pinging with a single-word machine name that is Netbios Naming
which is stored in WINS.

Delete it out of the WINS database. You can remove it from the DNS database
as well.
