Don't why you are trying to make it so complicated.
Simply use 1 NIC in each machine and connect a straight through cat5(not a
crossover) cable from each machine to the router. Run the windows
networking wizard for the xp machines and you're done.
Have the router set to use DHCP and forget the static IP's unless you have
some particular need for them. (you can always go back later and set up
static IP's if you need them, once your network is working OK)
If you're using static IP's you also need to set up the DNS servers from
your ISP.
