I can see one problem with that, and I'm not sure if it a
problem with the WRT54G, or just me.
I've not yet figured out how to configure (using the web
interface) a default route on the WRT54G's "LAN & Wireless"
port, as opposed to a default route on the "WAN Internet" port
(which, depending on the configuration, may have a default route
automatically added).
The trouble is the hosts connected by wireless need to be
configured with a default route with cable modem IP as the
gateway; but without also having a default route in the WRT54G,
returning packets don't find a valid route from the cable modem
to the wireless host (address translation is done at the cable
modem, and needs to be done again at the WRT54G, but apparently
doesn't happen without the default route).
My solution to that problem has been to upgrade the WRT54G
firmware with the HyperWRT_2.04b_G image (a free third party
product). With that it is possible fire up telnetd on the
router (via the web interface), then telnet in and 1) issue a
route command, and/or 2) put the route command into a startup
file that is executed everytime the router is rebooted.
I've also tried the satori firmware, which I like better except
that so far I haven't figured out how to make that route command
survive a reboot (no startup file...).
In any case, upgrading the firmware on the WRT54G is *well* worth
doing.
