I have seen this recommendation for fixing periodic dropout problems
(windows xp) even though a strong signal is present. I'm trying to get a
deeper understanding of the issues involved.

1. Why does enabling this function cause a problem? What is this
function trying to do and what is happening to cause a periodic dropout
problem?

2. Why does disbling this function appear to fix the problem?

Thanks,
Harvey

Disabling, not disbling.

802.11x authentication requires an authentication server as a means of
allowing the wireless to connect to a secure network. The
authentication server validates that the wireless has pre-defined
permission to connect, and makes that secure connection. SOHO LANs do
not typically have an authentication server, so the wireless is polling
constantly for the presence of the server, never finding one,
disconnecting from the connected network, connecting and trying again,
endlessly.

That was a layman's summary by a layman. Google "802.11x
Authentication" for the entire technical lecture.
