Q: Wireless Laptop Cards - Best 54\108mb & CPU usage??

Hi,

Any opinions would be welcome.

I have a Vaio C1VN and want to get a wireless laptop network card (for
home router\hub).

The C1VN has WinME, 128MB RAM and CPU is near 600Mhz.

Ideally I want one that is as fast as possible but uses as little CPU
time as possible and so far I have only been able to find specs on two
cards.

The Netgear WG511 54Mbps is said to require a 400mhz CPU and a D-Link
54Mb was advertised as needing 300mhz.

Its my guess that the 108mhz versions of these cards, at least, will
require a higher rated CPU.

In reading some of the problems reported on the D-Link 108Mb I suspect
that some people are experiencing some freeze up on their laptops due
to CPU load (that or a revision b card problem..)

Basically does anyone have experience with these cards on slower
laptops OR Know of any fast wireless laptop cards that use far less
CPU time?

Regards

Pete

I'm using a Linksys 802.1g card on a 450MHz laptop and it works fine.

I just looked at a Trust 108mb card and that requires a CPU of
600Mhz.. This is far worse than those now shuned software emulation
modems.

What speed is your card? Can you tell me its version details so I can
look it up on the web.

If its 108mb do you use the same manufacturer for your router as I
think that 108mbs is only possible within the same manufacturers group
of products? (As far as I can tell..)

It's Wireless G Notebook Adaptor, model WPC 54G.
It's 54mbs, I bought it before 108 came out, from reviews I have read
it seems likely you get better compatibility with 108 using cards from
the same manufacturer.

Cheers Jeff,

Sadly LinkSys don't do a 108mb card but the WPC54GS has what they
call SpeedBooster with upto 33% extra which is probably more honest
than what is offered by other manufacturers.

I still don't understand this but from what I have read I thought you
get no extra speed above 54mb if you use a different router that was
not deisgned to work with a paticular 108mb card?

Some of the netgear cards also need a bios flash before they will get
that speed.

There's so much to learn just to buy a simple solution... My heads
spining....
