Hello All:

I am working with an application running on W2K that is supposed to
send a warning via e-mail when a particular event occurs.

I set up IIS on w2k but it does not seem to work with the application.
While trying to resolve that problem, I thought of using my Linux that
is on the same home network.

Are there any resources on the net you can point me to that could help
me understand how this can be done?

Thanks!

Not without a more detailed description of what it is you want
to accomplish.

And your problem is? SMTP is a protocol established approx. 20 years
ago, maybe you should read the RFC?

AFAIK IIS is a http server, not some MTA.

Unclear what you are trying to do and where your Linux problem
is?

Are you trying to send mail to the Linux box, or use it as a server to
send mail elsewhere? Can you mail from the Linux box to the
destination?

Hello Bill:

Yes, I can mail from the Linux box to the destination.

What I was wondering if I can have my application to use the SMTP on
the Linux box to e-mail to the destination.

So, the application prepares the message on windows 2000. Somehow
delivers it to the Linux box over my home network. Linux takes over
sends the e-mail.

The function I am using in the application requires an SMTP server.
Thanks!

Hello Michael:

You say "IIS is a http server, not some MTA". When I set up the IIS, it
gave me the choice of setting up a "vitual SMTP server".

I checked through the Windows services window, and the SMTP server is
there and running.

However, my application is not able to use it yet.

I am therefore wondering if I can get the function im my application to
use the Linux box. Linux already is using SMTP, I can e-mail from it
directly using elm and pine.

Thanks!
