Because as long as gateway IP is within a.b.c.X/16 network, your PC knows
to use arp to find gw IP, and as long as your IP is within a.b.c.d/24
network, the gateway knows to find your IP using arp. If your IP was
outside of the a.b.c.d/24 network, it would not work.
However, Windows (samba) peer2peer networking would probably NOT work
between them because broadcast IPs would likely be different.
