What do you mean?

Certainly, a wireless router can work without a DSL or Cable connection. It's a
very good way to share printers, net storage devices and files.

Are you asking if you can use a router with a dialup modem? Yes - but it gets a
bit more complicated.

Sure. You can use it to route an internal network without ever connecting
to the Internet.

Or, you can use it to route to the internet via a dial-up connection.

Somehow I have a feeling that neither one of those is the answer to your
question, though. Try again?

No, you don't need a DSL connection. They also work fine with cable.

However, I suspect you're trying to do something different, so a little more
info would help.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply maybe I need to explain this a little bit more in
detail. Lets say I
have a couple of computers win98 and winxp home os and I want to network all
these computers
to a server using win2003. The server will be used basically as a webserver
and email and ftp
and will be a intranet.
Now I currently have a dial-up account and from what you say is that I
can use a wireless router
with a this account but how would you set it up.
thanks

Hello,
What I am trying to do is to route to the internet via a dial-up
connection to make like
a intranet but every book I read talks about using a dsl connection. How
does one setup
this using a dialup connection.
thanks

Basically, you'd use your dial-up machine as a router, with two NICs.

Basically, what you'll need to do is set up your PC to route out the dial-up
connection, and connect your wireless router to the PC's NIC.
(Correcting/clarifying earlier reply).

I'm not sure if this is part of Windows Server 2003 (which is not the best
choice for a home network) but you could use that computer to dial into your
ISP and then use internet connection sharing (ICS is definitely part of XP)
through an ethernet port. You would connect a switch to this ethernet port
and you would connect a wireless access point (preferably not a router since
the wired and wireless computers may not be able to see each other) and one
or more wired computers to the switch. ICS will act as a DHCP server for
all computers downstream of the ethernet port.

I'm not sure why you want to use ftp for an intranet since Windows has its
own way of sharing files.

You need a router that supports dialup. While at one time, that was the
only type you could buy, they're getting scarce these days.
