Greetings,

I am working for a small start-up company (15 employees)and we need to
puchase a block of /24 (old Class C) Address Space. Do we obtain this through
ICANN? If not, whom else could we acquire this through? I know there is a
justificaiton process, but we do meet those requirements. Many thanks!

Are you really sure that's what you need? Most companies get by with a very
small number (often: one) of static IP addresses (assigned by their ISP) and
NAT.

Many thanks for the quick reply!

How is NAT going to cover us for a Mail Server, FTP Server, et al?

Thanks!

Port forwarding to different internal servers. Unless you expect a huge
amount of traffic this should be sufficient.

If you use a cheap, consumer-oriented router you will be limited to port
forwarding (thanks, Kerry, I forgot to mention that). Higher end routers will
handle more than one external IP address, and allow you to map them
one-to-one to internal IP addresses. You can combine this with port
forwarding, if necessary; it will depend on how many servers you need on each
port, and how many IP addresses your IPS will give you. A fairly common
package is 5 static IP's, and an extra charge for additional ones.

Make sure to get more external IP addresses than you need initially, because
adding new ones in the future will probably require you to change your
initial ones. Although you only have to change your gateway router and your
external DNS entries, there will be some period of time when your servers
will be unreachable while the DNS changes propagate.

Good luck!
