Hi all.

I've just been reading all the tiscalli etc complaints anmd would like
to tell you about my recent line down with metronet.

Return from USA on Saturday to find that my wirfe was correct and our
broadband was down.

I contact BT and they tell me my line is OK.

I contact metronet and they tell me that this is what BT always say
and they will sort it out for me immediately. I suggest I go to a
friends house with my laptop and modem and make sure that my hardware
is OK. They say OK since it is nearly 5.30pm, do that and call us in
the morning but to leave my computer on for checking the next day.

Hardware was OK. SO.....................

Called metronet in the morning. Got through to the SAME person I spoke
to the evening before. (Oliver) He said he would get onto BT to sort
it that day (he also said BT were working on exchanges that week so
that was p[robably the problem) but to remember that they can
sometimes take up to 5 hours to fix it.

Came back that evening and the connection was back to its fantastic
self.

I'm a low user and on their 10ukp+vat service. (all I have ever paid
was 11.75/month for Broadband) :-)

When you call them, it's an option of a london number or an 0870
number. :-)

You get someone that knows what they are talking about. :-)

They speak english fluently. :-)

They sort the problem. :-)

Connection is like lightning. :-)

So big public "thank you" to metronet for their GREAT service. Why
anyone would want tiscalli, freeserve etc I dont know???????

Regards
Bob Hartley

Hi Bob

Good to hear a favourable story for once as well as the usual complaints. I
am just switching to plus from BTOW at the moment and (so far) am very
impressed with their customer service - they phoned me to tell me the state
of my connection progress

Regards, Mike

I can second this, I have been on about 3 weeks and I had an issue with
smtp and Metronet. I received what I took to be a offhand email from their
tech support, however I READ IT WRONG and even after I sent a snotty
reply, then apologised, they helped me out AND they openly support Linux.
I have found also that they keep you well informed about things going wrong as
well as things that are right.
More power to your elbow Metronet.
I am also on paygo500. usual disclaimer !!.

Cheers

Dave

Is it true you can set up your OE SMTP to continue with your existing email
setup (without having to pay Metronet £9/yr for a mailbox) ? I'm thinking
of signing up with them when my exchange goes 'live' in 5-6 weeks.

Depends on whether your old ISP will accept SMTP connections from
outside their network. Most don't.

If you meant POP mail collection, then most ISPs will allow connections
from utside their network to collect mail.

Any smtp goes through Metronets server. Don't think what you want is
possible. You can certainly collect pop from other ISP's. I collect from
Clara and Freeserve. May have to dial in every couple of months to keep
accounts active.

I use stand alone email provider via authenticated POP / SMTP (GMX).
Would that work on Metronet BB ?

Martin

Ask Metronet support. They are very quick in replying. I asked them
several questions before I joined.

Might be worth looking at www.fastmail.fm They have free trial but
for a one-off fee you'd get service using IMAP/POP/SMTP. Peter M.

Actually, the free "guest" account is not just a trial - it is a full
IMAP/web mail account with 10MB space which you can keep as long as
you like.

(Hopefully people who use it like it enough to upgrade to the paid
levels though! - we rely on them to keep us fed... ;-)
