Any fans of Public DNS here?

http://soa.granitecanyon.com/

Can it be used to add my newly acquired domain name to the internet?

I'm using CustomDNS from dyndns.org and it's great, but I was
just wondering if I could have used PublicDNS which is free.

Thanks,
jd

Do they have pledge breaks? ;-)

I used them for a couple of years until they went down for 5-6 days with
hardware problems! I then decided to host my own primary DNS and use
secondary.com as my secondary service.

secondary.com was bought by UltraDNS. The service is still free, but it
just feels like UltraDNS wants to start charging. Another still-free
service is ZoneEdit, www.zoneedit.com.

I also use CustomDNS from dyndns.org and yes it does work great! I got
in when there was only a one time charge. I would have no hesitation to
paying a small annual fee for a quality service that works! Wouldn't
you?

I'd certainly say so. All together, I paid $34 for one year for my
domain name ($8) and DNS ($25). I think this is the best $34 I've spent
on computer related costs. From the bit of reading I've done on running
your own DNS server, it sounds like something I could do without.

Thanks all for your feedback!!

If you are already running your own server, running your own DNS server
isn't that hard. If your services are hosted, you are probably better
off having your dns hosted as well.
