Help

I've got a netbook, a Dell TrueMobile 1150 PC Card and a netgear
WGT624 wireless router. I'd like to be able to use all three in tandem
for internet stuff, but despite fiddling with the myriad of settings
on all three devices I can't get the netbook to register that there is
a network in the house.

Any clues would be welcome...

Should work, assuming that the Netgear is 802.11b WiFi compliant.
Netgear wireless products are often released with very flaky firmware
at launch - make sure you've loaded the latest Netgear firmware into
your WGT624.

I'm assuming that your WGT624 does 802.11b.

Have a look at Mr. Diem's excellent FAQ for lots of info about Netbook
networking :-

http://www.epocfaq.co.uk/faqNetworks.htm#wireless

1150 should be a standard Orinoco card. Does it block the stylus hole
on the Netbook - if not then you might have a later type of
non-Orinoco 1150 card ??

Netbook should be configured for DHCP. Card type ("Device") needs to
be set to Lucent WaveLAN/Orinoco Card. Set hostname to something e.g.
'netbook'. You can leave everything else as defaults - e.g. blank
WaveLan network name etc.

Get everything working without WEP first. 1150 only does 40/64-bit WEP
from memory.

Use the Netbook's excellent NetStatRF programme to monitor what is
happening at the Netbook end when you try and connect.

Best WiFi card for the Netbook is the Melco slimline (Orinoco) card,
as this doesn't block the stylus hole on the Netbook.

Hope this helps,

Ralph

ps. Maybe see you in a loop between Brum and Kyle this weekend.

Done. I'm now at Firmware Version V4.1.11_1.0.1

Yep, and it's set for "b only"

Yep, the pen is trapped!

You hit the nail on the head there I had the netgear set to WPA-PSK
rather than WEP.

Thanks for the pointers.

Doubt it. It's not the same as with a type 5, and it will be pretty
dark for the relavent bits.

I assume that its now working OK ?

If not, the other thing to try is to use a fixed IP address on the NB,
and not DHCP.

There is a recent thread on the PDSStreet forums where it is suggested
that some wireless routers don't handle DHCP with the Netbook very
well.

Very sensible indeed - this tour could turn out to be the ultimate in
masochism ! 14 hours plus from Brum to Inverness - must be less that
40mph average. What a stagger. On the return you could leave Kyle
several hours later, and get back to Brum several hours earlier on
service trains. Freight train timings by Notwork rail for EWS charters
as ever. Pathetic.

It all wnet a bit binary. Either the netbook was working, or the PC
but not both together...

I think I will stick to the big screen for browsing, but it was
certainly a novelty to download my emails at more than 9K6.

Have you tried connecting a netbook with the GNER WiFi service, or is
it strickly PC only?

Indeed. Gary wrote he'd only done 5 charters so far this year in RE,
I'm not much better. I've started to do the short leaps, it's just not
worth the hassle trogging from loop to loop in the quest for yet
another shed scratch.

On the other hand my 375/377/450 haulages are coming along quite
nicely...

Yes I tried the Netbook on the GNER WiFi, and the Netbook would not
work with the crappy PC based authentication server used by GNER.
However my Simpad (WinCE 4.1 tablet from Siemens) worked a treat on
the GNER WiFi.

I even tried authenticating using the Simpad and then swapping the
Orinoco card over to the Netbook, but to no avail.

50 was the highlight of the tour for me. Although Preston power box
signallers deserve to be taken out and shot, for looping us at
Carnforth for no apparent reason. 50 sounded good too, but D9000 went
*much* faster down Shap;-) Also D9000 went much faster *up* Shap
too;-) As did Deltic 9.
