ISDN / Business Highway offers connections on 64k channels.
On some ISP services, one can cause a connection to jump from a single channel
to use both channels (ie 2x 64k -> 128 kbps - or a speed approximating to a
quarter of the basic 500 kbps broadband entry point). Unfortunately it is
not a cheap option (BT has only in the last 3 months stopped supply of new
*Home Highway* accounts (which were charged at 25 pounds a month, inc VAT).
I don't know the cost of Business Highway, but it will be somewhat higher, I
expect, and the installation/upgrade charge may be not insignificant. NB
there's Business Highway (which provides sockets for ISDN data, 2x BT phone
sockets, and a USB port) and ISDN 2e, which only allows has the ISDN data
sockets (soo you'd have to have an ISDN phone, or use an adaptor).
There's a whole pile of info about the Highway box at the website of Phil
McKerracher - see <http://www.mckerracher.org/>
Just checked
www.bt.com/business on the Products A-Z for Business Highway
and conversion is 149 +VAT with rental cost of 93 +VAT per quarter, or on
a 'Start Up' plan, 99 setup, 142 per quarter with 60 in 'call allowance'
to credit you (there may be some competitive business rates on calls, so
you'd save 50 quid on converting your existing line, but still quite a
jump from the cost of running an ordinary residential phone line. PGM.
