proxy like server for Real Media streams on linux?

I would like to set up a proxyserver that caches and distributes Real
Media streams. The optimum solution would be to point the users to a
specific local URL that delivers the stream (e.g. BBC-one live stream),
so they do not need to configure their Real Player.
Can this be realized on a linux box without using the expensive Helix proxy?
