AFAIK all NTL port 80 traffic HAS to go through their (supposedly)
Transparent Proxy and there is not a lot you can do about it.

Yes port 80 traffic does, but if you set your browser to use another
NTL caching proxy that accepts requests on port 8080, it will
circumvent the problem ones. When NTL Cambridge proxies have been
broken, I selected one in Guildford (see the list in Robin Walker's
pages below) and it worked fine.
