I've just installed a Radio Shack USB network link between
my desktop and my lap top.

Now when I boot up my desktop computer, I'm asked to
identify myself and my password for the network connection
before the boot process completes, which it does
successfully.

On my laptop, however, I get the error message: "The
following error occurred while loading prototol number 2.
Eror 38: The computer name you specified is already in
use on the network. To specify a different name, double-
click the Network icon in Control Panel."

When I hit return, I get the same message, only this time
it's protocol number 4.

The names identifying the two computers are different.
Wierder yet, this happens even when the laptop is
completely disconnected from the network...i.e. the USB
plug is pulled at boot up.

However, when both computer complete boot cycle, I can
access the desktop from my laptop. On the other hand,
though I can see the laptop listed on "Network
Neighborhood" on the desktop I can't access it's hard
drive.

I've tried renaming the laptop, and I still get the error
message, even when disconnected from the network.

What can I do? The laptop is a Gateway Solo 3450, a slim
computer that locks into a docking station when at home.

Thanks,
Dan
