I am considering migrating to Plusnet broadband from btanytime. Plusnet, if
I am reading their blurb correctly, give you the option of either a static
or dynamic IP address. What are the advantages, if any, of a static IP for a
"home user"?

Hi,
for normal use, there is no advantage to having a static IP. However,
if you ever want to run a web server, it will be easier with a static IP. A
static IP also allows you to connect to your machine remotely over the
internet from work or an internet cafe. It can be useful to allow your
friends to find files shared on your machine, that sort of thing.

All of this is also possible with a dynamic IP, it is just a bit more
difficult, and requires the use of a DDNS service. Currently, dynamic IPs
on ADSL change only occasionally (probably only when it's most
inconvenient), so I can think of no advantage to having a dynamic IP unless
it is cheaper from your chosen provider.

Is it harder for hackers to hack dynamic IP's or just the same?

Since even a dynamic IP doesn't change very often on ADSL,
and hardly ever on cable DSL, you can safely say it's the
same ;-)

Chris <(E-Mail Removed)> was kind enough to write these words
of wisdom:

Actually with Plusnet you can only have a static IP address , the way their
ADSL is set up they cannot do Dynamic IP .
