NO!
Please print out what I wrote and follow it through exactly - do not change
anything without reporting back first.
If after reviewing these words you are not totally clear on what to do then
I suggest you abandon any attempt to edit the registry as you risk losing
your system. If you decide to proceed, you do so at your own risk.
I have no idea how well this will work under W2K. It should work much the
same, but it also depends a lot on the quality of the Wireless Zero Config
software.
In the Control Panel did it say that the name of the .sys file for your
Wireless Network device was BT4501D.Sys?
I suggest you double and triple check it from the instructions to make sure
this is the correct entry. If it is wrong you may need to use Last Known
Good boot option - if you do not know how to do this then I suggest you
stop.
To navigate to the correct Key in the registry, start regedit, open up
HKEY_LOCL_MACHINE,
Open up System, Services, then open CurrentControlSet (forget permanently
about the other control sets), scroll down to the correct key - which may be
BT4501D from what you have said and look in there at the Start setting.
As I say below, you should not be changing anything in any 'ControlSet'
other than 'CurrentControlSet'. If you do then you are stuffing up your
ability to use Last Known Good**. IE the system keeps 4 'ControlSets' There
is Current, then there are 3 going back in time reflecting Old sets of
system configuration. If you change one of the otehr controlsets, you are
whiping out the saved configuration at that point in time.
The only parameter you do want to change - only when you have correctly
identified the correct key is the Start value:
> Start = 0x0000003 (3)
The change is to set it to 2.
If you were to change it to say 1 or 0 then your system may not start at
all. This is why I am insisting that you demonstrate you understand what you
are looking at and that what you are looking at is the correct entry.
You do not want to change the Tag, Type, or any other values in there!!!!!!!
You do not ever want to change anything in ControlSet001, ControlSet002,
ControlSet003, or ControlSet004!!!!!!!!
If you make a change it will only be ONE value in ONE place.
** Last Known Good
This is a special boot option available via F8 at the very beginning of
Windows Boot where selecting it causes windows to use the Previous
ControlSet so tossing out any changes you or any installation software may
have made that has caused the system to become unbootable. Remeber YOU
(think I) always use CurrentControlSet. The system can use Last Known Good
Control Set if (You) it becomes stuffed up. If you edit any ControlSet other
than CurrentControlSet you are stuffing Last Known Good. The system can
automatically use Last Known Good by its own decision if a fatal start error
occurs.
