Profiles Issue offline

Hi
I have set up users to have roaming profiles, but my laptop users cannot log
onto their machines when offline.

I went into the User Accounts pages and added their network ID to the local
user list and all works, except they get a message saying their roaming
profile cannot be found when the logon.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Julian

Not quite sure what you mean. It is normal to get an error message when you
log in disconnected from the domain, asking if you want to use cached
credentials,

Hi Anthony

No it's not asking me to use the cached profile, it is saying it can't find
a copy of the roaming profile. I know it's not normal as my work laptop (I
volunteer for this place) doesn't give me the message.

Cheers,
Julian

Have they already logged onto that machine before, on the domain?

Hi Anthony

Yes they have. No errors are reported on logon or logoff.

Hi Julian,
Sorry for the basic questions but its hard to tell from what you have said
whether its just something simple or more complicated.
You don't need to put their domain account into the Users group. It should
already bere there, as the Domain Users group should be a member of the
local Users group.
What is the exact error message, and when offline can they log on or not?

Hi Anthony

No problem, often best to check! The error message is...

"Windows cannot update your roaming profile. Possible causes of this error
include a network problem or insuffcient security rights. If this problem
persits contact your administrator."

This message doesn't appear when connected to the network.

Whilst offline the user can logon fine with the exception of this message;
they can see their offline files, etc. as expected. It's just the annoying
message!

Cheers,
Julian

You can try setting debug logging: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221833
But I must admit that at the moment is just sounds like a usability error.
It sounds like the error you would expect to get when logging off, for
example if you had logged on while on the network, disconnected and then
tried to log off or shut down.
Are you sure they are getting this message when they do a clean start off
the network?

I'll try the debug logging. they are NOT (sorry, can't but in bold!) getting
the message on the network at logon or logoff.

It only happens when they logon off the network.

All very strange and I agree I'd expect to see it at logoff too.
