Hi All,

I've been trying to setup networking on an old P166 MMX (running
Debian Sarge, linux kernel 2.4.20-3), using an "SMC EtherCard Elite 16C
Ultra (SMC8216C)" ISA card.
The card had been used successfuly on Redhat and Win95 some years ago.

The smc-ultra.o module and eth0 seem to load up fine, ip configuration
seem to be right. I did not see any error messages anywhere, but it just
can't talk to the network (all pings fail).
When trying to ping other hosts, you see the leds on the hub
blinking happily, but other hosts don't recieve any packets.
When other hosts broadcast on the net, all packets are counted as RX
errors.

When using EZSTART program provided on the SMC drivers floppy, all
tests (loopback, memory. etc.) pass successfuly. I can't use their
"2-node" test, because I don't have another SMC card (other hosts on net
have onboard NIC).
The network-cable is fine (was tested with another computer). All
nodes are operating at 10mbps half-duplex.
One problem I did notice, is that there is no "Media Link On" message
in the system log (see below).

I reached a dead end trying to further diagnose the situation. I want
to know whether I'm missing something in my configuration or is the card
busted (and determine this without buying a new card or installing
another OS...).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Amit A.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Details:
---------
(*) Relevant messages from 'dmesg' output:

--------------------------------------------------->
smc-ultra.c: Presently autoprobing (not recommended) for a single card.
smc-ultra.c: No ISAPnP cards found, trying standard ones...
smc-ultra.c:v2.02 2/3/98 Donald Becker ((E-Mail Removed))
eth0: SMC Ultra at 0x300, ** ** ** ** ** **, IRQ 10 memory 0xe0000-0xe3fff.
<---------------------------------------------------

*note* Comparing system log with output on other (working) computers, I
noticed that there is *no* "eth0: Media Link On..." message.
This might mean that the card does not detect the connection to the
net - or does not report it to linux (however, the led on the card does
shine green when connected).

(Here I used autoprobe, and smc-ultra detected the IO,IRQ,memory
correctly. I also tried using other IO configs with EZSTART, using
hard-configurations with jumpers, avoiding autoprobe by giving
parameters to smc-ultra - all with same results)

"HWaddr **:**:**:**:**:**"
Why is there no MAC?

Try to use alternate paramters: ( and don't forget to set the irq of
interest to isa/PnPin the bios first!

io=0x280 irq=3
io=0x300 irq=10

Another driver perhaps? I have an smc here that uses the wd driver. It's
got jumpers on it that set what io and irq it's supposed to use.

I checked on another (working) computer and it's 40 there too.
route (ver 1.98, net-tools ver 1.60) does not allow setting this to 0.
For any value lower than 64 I get "route: Invalid MSS/MTU."

40 is what you get if you don't specify any mss value when adding the
route (probably this is what debian's "ifup" command does).

Assuming that your 0 means something like "no upper limit", I tried
setting mss to 9999 (MTU is just 1500, so this should effectively mean
no limit) - no visible effect. Also tried 64 with same result

Well, there is. I just F&Rep'ed it with stars.
Pretty useless effort on my part really - so, if it makes any
difference, it's 00:00:C0:3B:AF0 ...
