I want to move from my ISP, Sky and go for someone a bit smaller and
with better customer service. But there is a problem. When they do
thier speed test they claim that my line can only handle 512kbps and
that they could not put on a service above 1 meg. This is not the case
however. Wth sky at the moment i get around 2-3meg. When i signed up
for sky broadband they did thier test and claimed i could get a max
speed of 4 meg. But days after the order was placed and i recieved my
router I was told by sky that BT had cancelled the order for some
reason which i was never told dispite asking. They connected my
service and it got around 3 meg, which was Ok. However after BT
cancelled the order, the many times that sky performed 'speed tests'
they claimed that the Max speed that i could get was 1 meg and told my
many times to reduce the package, if i did not download much. I did
not becuase a 2gb monthly limit was just too small. Is there anyway of
finding out why BT cancelled the order the first time or get them to
do a proper test which reports the Lines true capabilty.

I found a load of info and indeed a link to a postcode/phone number
checker here..

www.kitz.co.uk

When I keyed in my details, it came up with pretty much what I can
reliably get.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php

FWIW my ISP is Claranet. My download speeds seem to be line/BRAS limited
rather than ISP bandwidth limited.

ADSL Max, 2GB/month cap, £19.99 a month. Honest price for honest service
IMHO.

Clara are smaller and more business oriented than most. I didn't think
the support was anything special, but compared with the horror stories
here, it sounds like they are rather better than most.

I have a free fixed IP address - useful for me as I do a bit of remote
support - and that makes firewalling the remote sites I need to access easy.

There appears to be no shaping applied to anything. Exceeding cap limits
nets you a surcharge IIRC.

Their mail servers are sound, and the news server is not too bad.

You may need to go t £29.99 month if you move a lot of data. 10Gb/month...

http://www.uk.clara.net/home-office/...broadband.html

Recommended if you are prepared to pay a small premium for real
bandwidth, and solid servers, and reasonable support.

10 gig/month A LOT of data???? try living in a house with 5 PCs and 4 kids,
circa 80Gb/month is normal for me.
i use an entanet reseller, vivacity, to have an allowance of 330Gb for
£20/month with free uk support

Here is what Kitz tells me, which is basically what the ISP's are
telling me.

BT Exchange Information
Exchange: Stechford. BT Code: CMSTE
Location: Stuarts Road, B33 8UQ.
ADSL enabled : December 31, 2000
dsl Max enabled: March 30, 2006
SDSL enabled : Enabled
21CN due : 2009
Distance:- Direct: 2.31 km
(appx)* By Road: 2.9 km

BT Line Speed Estimation

Fixed ADSL: 512 kbps (0.5 Mb)
DSL Max : 500 kbps (0.5 Mb)

Important: The above figures are an estimate based on information
obtained from the BTw database.
DSLmax speeds are best guess based on the surrounding area and cannot
take into effect individual line conditions which may effect the
result such as the type of equipment you use or other issues which may
affect the Signal to

RAG Test Results

Fixed: 1Mbps and 2Mbps not possible
radsl: 512Kbps and 256Kbps available
MAX: ADSL Max is available
SDSL: 256 kbps available
SDSL: 256kbps may be available.
TPON: TPON/Fibre not recorded
Check: The check identified another service on your line which may
prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection. Examples are :
Existing adsl connection, DACs, LLU, TPON

adsl 1 linecode : RGEC
dslmax linecode: REGEGEC
sdsl linecode: 1111ARRRZZZZEEEE

Explanation of RAG codes.

Ta for this.
Just checked and get max. of 2Mb; on a good day the connection's at 1.8Mb.
Last w/e I downloaded 697MB Linux distro in just on 1 hour.

Homecall/Pipex/Tiscali told me that I'd get 1.5Mb, so I'm satisfied with
the speed (damned sight better than the bus service in this village).

The direct distance is 2.33km and it's 3.3km by road - how does this
compare with others at about the same distance?

Odd. I would have thought 3km would have allowed faster than that :-(

I am rated at 2.4km by road, and the site says 2.5Mbps..I get connection
speeds up to 4Mbps, and I am on a BRAS profile of 3mpbs.

I would have THOUHT that you should see 2-2.5Mps..in reality on ADSL max..

heres mine From Kitz..
=====================
Distance:-
Direct: 2.09 km
By Road: 2.41 km
Fixed ADSL: 1024 kbps (1 Mb)
DSL Max : 2500 kbps (2.5 Mb)

From my router:
================

Down up
3552 kbps 448 kbps
SNR 8.0 dB 0.0 dB
ATEN 46 dB 25 dB

I could do better - noise margin is set high for reliability.

MY BRAS is set to 3000, and I get download/upload around 2800/384

My fault threshold is 3535 and my max reliable is actually 4500 or so.
I will proaby get the margin reset - its vey conservative.

Thats another difference on my line. People around me have an
attenuation similar to yours, 45 -46db i am at 55db according to the
router.

Oh. I can get that too if I change the RX gain ;-)

SNR is what counts.. what are you seeing?
