problems with shared resources

Hello everybody,

I bought the LinkSys WRT54G wireless router and WPC54G wireless PCMCIA card
for my laptop.

I updated the firmware on my router ( version 2.0), and set up the network.
For my wireless node, I am using SSID (no broadcast) and WEP (128 bit
encryption).

I have a static IP setup (i.e the router is not set-up as a DHCP server). I
have two desktops on the wired connection (on the router); one using Windows
XP pro and other Windows 98. Here' the problem I am having:

When the laptop (also running XP pro) is on the network, connected through
wireless I cannot see the shared resources on other machines on the LAN. I
can ping the machines, successfully, by their IP address. However, as soon
as I move the laptop on the wired network, using the Ethernet card on the
laptop, I can see all the resources. Browsing the net in both cases is not a
problem, at all.

I have tried almost everything (that I can think of); i.e verified settings
on the router, and compared TCP/IP properties of both wired and wireless. I
cannot figure out what's going on. One article I found on the net, suggested
to check "NetBios over TCP/IP" in the TCP/IP settings (advanced) tab. I did
that and still no fix.

I called Cisco/LinkSys tech help and they bluntly refused to help on this
issue. They told me plainly to search the net for help.

Please help!!!

Thanks,

Asim

For the XP machine to see that Win 9'x machine and access it, you'll need
to create the networking diskette using the Networking Wizard and install
it on the non NT based O/S(s) machine so that XP can access the
resources. That's what I have been told. I don't have a Win 9'x machine
on the network using a Linksys 11S4 V1 router.

I use NWlink IPX/SPX NetBios compatiable on two XP machines one of them
being wireless and one wired Win2k machine. I have no issues sharing
resources with none of them. And I have not gone to the Advan Tab to do
anything.

You may need to use Netbios over TCP/IP on the Win 9'x machine

I guess Linksys Tech Support really sucks now.

Duane,

Thanks for your response. However, I really think its some other
configuration settings required, than what you mentioned below. Because, (as
I mentioned below) once on the wired network, I have no problems looking at
both 9x and XP machines. But, as soon as the Laptop is moved on the wireless
connection (with the other two machines - 98 and XP Pro - still on the wired
network), it cannot look at resources on the other two. The interesting
thing is that your can ping by IP address but cannot map a drive even using
a UNC path with ip in it (\\192.168.x.x\share\).

So, it may be something different in the TCP/IP settings for the two
connections (even though I have thoroughly compared the two).

Hmmmm........

With WEP enabled on the wireless machine, the wireless machine could not
access the wired machines or the other way around using NETbeui. With WEP
off the machines could access each other. Using NetBios or NWlink with
WEP enabled, the machines could access each other.
