Problems installing Netgear MA101 on Windows XP

I'm having trouble installing my Netgear MA101 USB network card.

I plug it in and install the drivers as the manual says, and then get
stuck there. The MA101 shows up in the device manager but doesn't
show up whatsoever ino the Network Connections. The manual says
another window is supposed to pop up (that wireless connections dialog
where you choose the router to connect to, etc.), but I don't get
that.

The router I have is a Linksys BEFW11S4, but I'm pretty sure the
problem doesn't lie there- other network/wireless cards work fine with
it.

Any ideas on what's going on?

You may want to do the install with the O/S's Device Manager to install
the driver. You may have to go to the Website and download the driver.
You can also configure the card there as well at the Device Manager.

*usually*, with usb devices, it's normal to install the
drivers/software first, then plug the device in, whereby
Windoze "sees" it and installs it automatically. Does the
manual for your device give any clue as to the correct way
of installing this device?

I tried installing through the Device Manager as well and it didn't help.

Using Netgear's old configuration utility (the new ones didn't come with
the utility), I was
successfully able to connect to the router and send packets back and
forth. But this is
still useless because Windows still doesn't know to actually use the card
to connect to the
Internet.

I'll try installing new drivers, haven't done that yet.

If the new information I provided helps, please let me know.

My best shot for you was the new driver and Device Manager. You may want
to call Tech Support for the card. I know you may not want to do that but
sometimes they do help.

It's not that easy sometimes, Netgear provided the last driver for my
WG311 as an installer... I could not open the package to get the needed
*.sys.

By the way, if you got an idea how to "unpack" such an installer...

I have an MA101 and its flaky. Bought it for my sons machine with XP, ran
great. Then we had to redo XP, won't work with it. Actually rolled machine
back to 98SE worked great again. Recently redid 98SE, no go again. Bought a
Linksys PCI card and its fine again. Put the MA101 on my sons XP (SFF so
limited slots). Worked fine immediately but for occassional lags which I
believe are the MA101 not the AP. If you just bought it, return it. Too
much trouble. On my son's win98se machine, it would see the AP in ad hoc
mode but not in infrastructure mode. With the XP setup, just won' t see it
in the end. I do remember that XP tried to control it and it did work that
well. With the Netgear configuration software easier to use. If I remember
correctly, you can go to the networking sheet and right click the adapter to
control it.
