Problems getting networking working

I have never done this so I am probably missing something. I have a
laptop and desktop both with win98se. I bought a router, a pci card and
pcmcia adapter all wired which are all working since I can get on the
internet with both computers and at the same time. I have followed
instructions to best I can. In network neighborhood I get the message
"unable to browse the network". I just read a response for a similar
question. He said to go to start run and type in \\computername. I did
and go a message it couldn't find computer named xx. I've got Client for
Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP, dial up Adapter and in primary network logon
I have Client for Microsoft Networks in the box. When the logon window
comes up, it has the computer name as user name and a blank for
password. I put "admin" in password. Problem is I wasn't ask and set a
username and password. So maybe this isn't my username and password.
Should I have been prompted for one? How can I set one now. I would
rather not have a username or password if it can be set to logon without
one. Any good web site explaining in detail how it should be set up?.
The instructions that came with the hardware seems ok but I still can't
make it work.
Any help?
Thanks
