Problems getting Internet Connection Sharing to work over wifi

I have a wired and wireless network.

All systems are running XP

One system connects to the internet and then shares the internet connection
using Windows ICS tool

The computers connected to the network via wires can see the internet
connection and can connect to the internet

The computer trying to connect to the internet via wireless cannot see the
internet connection - however I can ping the wireless laptop, and the
wireless laptop can ping the system sharing the internet connection, and I
can transfer files between the two

Any ideas? thanks

Check the firewall settings in the laptop.

Ron Bandes, CCNP, CTT+, etc.

What IP is the wireless computer getting? If it's getting a 169 IP then
the computer is having trouble getting an IP from the DHCP server on the
ICS host machine. The IP will allow the machine to work on the LAN ping
and share files. But the IP will not allow the machine to go the
Internet. This is usually do to a mis-configuration of the NIC.

The TCP/IP stack can be hosed at this point as well still producing the
169 IP condition. You should try using the wire connection on the machine
to see if the stack is not hosed before proceeding further, if the
machine is getting the 169 IP.

I am manually assigning IPs to sytems, apart from the system connected to
the internet which gets 192.168.0.1 automatically

The system connected via wires is 192.168.0.212 and the laptop via wifi is
192.168.0.13

So much for that approach.

Does the machine with the wireless have a wire connection? Does the wire
connection have the same issues?

Are you using the Wizard? And is the Bridge icon showing for the
connection in the LAN connection screen for the NIC?

Ok, I plugged the laptop into the wired network and used the wizard to
create a network bridge for both the wired and wireless and it found my
connection to the internet and worked - I disconnected the cable and it then
stopped working

Oh, and it automatically assigned it an IP address of 192.168.0.145

I hope it holds as well and if it has worked for you then good.

I mentioned the Bridge because it can present problems and I have never
used it from that point forward. I never use the Network Wizard as it can
present problems as well. You should look into the NT classic mode of
configuring the NIC's and ICS. The old way is still viable and simple and
sometimes the best.

Ok thanks for that, if it does happen again I'll have a look into manually
configuring things
