Problems With DLINK DWL-700AP

I have a DLINK DWL 700-ap and am having trouble using it as a wireless
client

I have successfully connected via the wired link to a port on my wireless
router and set it as a wireless client

my ip setup is on 192.168.1.xxx
the router is 192.168.1.254

the dlink wireless ap is set to 192.168.1.50

if i connect the ap to my pc that i want to use a s the wireless connection,
i can connect to the ap but not to the router (or therefore, the net)

what do i need to set up as my tcp/ip settings to connect to the router?

The router is WEP encrypted and as far as i know i have set the connection
correctly via the control panel for the access point

any help would be gratefully appreciated
