we have anew pc that is on bt broadband through a 4 way router (only 1 pc
connect at the moment)
the problem is, if it is left on line it loses its connection and cant
display pages or download emails. i have tried all the things i can think of
(power shut down etc) and still no joy, the only way to reconnect is to
reboot the pc.
after rebooting the server settings on my email accounts have to be reset.
as they change from their incoming mail settings (pop.) to local host..

anyone shed any light on this

Mark

Can you confirm you are on BT Broadband and not BT Openworld ?

Can you explain a bit more what you mean by "if it is left online" - do you
mean its okay if you switch it on and off and use it for a short period of
time.

Does the PC actually lock up - or is it still functional ? If its still
functional, what are the Properties of the network connection used to
connect to the router ? Right click the Connection ==> Properties and then
select tabs to get IP address, subnet and Default gateway

Are you running a localhost mailserver on your machine or using something
like mail.btopenworld.com to send emails ?

Not sure about why you are disconnecting, but with your POP3, are you
running any anti-virus software ?

PC-cillin that I use changes the POP3 setting to 'localhost' in order to
scan incoming mail. It isn't a problem, it's just your anti virus software
working.

Having said that, if you haven't got anti-virus, then it IS a problem !

The localhost issue has been answered POC-Cillin does the same on my PC,
The disconnects could be poor ADSL filters - try some quality ones

Regarding the mail settings, sorry can't help you.

Regarding the "lost" connection I also get this with BT broadband, it
happened through the USB modem and also happens now I've got a (SAR715PVW)
router. After a day or so of inactivity I cannot connect to the outside
world although the connection shows as still connected. You can bring the
connection back to life by pinging an external IP address, it'll time out a
few times then suddenly you'll get a response and all will be well again.
It's as though BT block your connectivity if you don't use it for a while.
It'll also come back to life if I reboot the router. If you keep a constant
ping going (ping -t) to the outside world it then doesn't drop the
connection.

Rgds
