problems with dialup networking

Hi there.

Recently I had a problem with my Windows 98 and had to reinstall over the
existing copy. Earlier I had a dialup connection for Internet with a HSP56
Pro V.92 MicroModem with all the drivers loaded & Windows recognized it. I
had accessed the Internet many times over with the same.
Now, after reinstalling, I am unable to connect to the Net as the Dialup
connection says "modem not found". I tried reinstalling the modem, but still
I am unable to connect. Removed all modems, ports & rebooted and reinstalled
modem drivers & ports, but does not work. I even removed the Dialup Adapter
in the Network section, but this does not help.
The modem is an internal modem (HSP56). Drivers are loaded as per the
Hardware Manufacturer's detail.
The modem is setup on COM4 & the Windows doesnot recognize this port. When
trying to create a new connection, the "select Modem" option is greyed out &
hardware wizard is activated to install a modem (which says no new hardware
found).
Machine specs: PI MMX with 160MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 8MB PCI Graphics card.

I am suspecting a virus because some .com & .ini files were deleted from the
windows directory.
I have restored win.com (renaming win.cnf) from the .cab files of windows
install cd & windows is running fine now. No problems with it. No
reformatting of the HDD was done.
Also, I have checked with latest virus definitions, but no virus was found.

I dont see any conflicts. No yellows, no reds in the Device Manager.

The modem is installed properly in the OS (Win98 SE) in the port COM4 (is it
a virtual port?). I have only two COM ports.
Querying the modem gives a proper response. But when creating the new
dialup, the OS does not detect this port & instead tries to detect a new
modem.
The modem I installed is an internal PCI modem (HSP56 Pro modem).
I have DUN 1.4 installed. Is this any problem?

The modem seems to be a PnP device as it is automatically detected by the
OS, but on a port COM4 (its an internal HSP56 PCI modem with PCTel drivers).

I have uninstalled the DUN1.4, removed Dialup Networking, removed Dialup
adapter, rebooted several times. Again installed Dialup Networking &
Adapter, installed modem & tried to create a new connection. All these were
done in various orders & each time a cold reboot was also done.

But I just cant create a new dialup connection .
What am I doing wrong?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

PS: How & where do I attach files? & what size?

try booting to safe mode and deleting modem from control panel (i suspect
you may have multiple entries that only show in safe mode, remove all
entries)

i believe this is text only so ...text inline only
