problems with DHCP

At my office we have a small network. We typically have 5 computers and a
print server hooked up. 1 of the 5 computers is a Windows 2000 server
computer and is on SP3. One of the other computers (mine) is a laptop with
Windows XP SP2. The issue is that every so often when I come in in the
morning my laptop will not get assigned an address until the server is
rebooted. I've tried ipconfig /renew and I've tried rebooting my computer
with no luck. This problem started about the same time as another problem
which I think might be related and that is a DNS issue. If you did a ping
on the name of my computer it would return 1 address and that ipaddress
never worked and if you ran ipconfig on my computer it gave you a different
address. After living with both problems for a while...in which the second
one was the most annoying for the other didn't happen that often...I fixed
it by editing the .dns files in the C:\winnt\system32\dns directory. They
guy who set up our server had hardcoded that my laptop would always be a
certain address in the dns file but I was no longer being assigned that
address. This may have all been started by the fact that I replaced my
laptop a year ago which is roughly when I remember it started happening.
The name of the new laptop is the same as the old and I can't find any place
other than the dns file and the DHCP leases that my computer is ever
mentioned in a network sense. As far as my recent memory goes I can only
remember this occuring on mondays which is only important that my boss does
shut down the server for a portion of the weekend and my computer gets taken
home every night. To make it even weirder...it hasn't happened every
monday.

Thanks in advance for any help given,
Brandon

If I'm so clear then why are you talking about static when I cleary said I
eliminated that...and that it had nothing to do with my problem. The other
part that has me confused is thatyou are saying if I don't want static then
leave it to automatic. The DHCP has been automatic from the start. The
problem is that it sometimes doesn't assign me an address. When this
happens I have to reboot the server. Then it will assign me one just fine.
This being said it seems as if your solution can't be a solution for you are
stating its current setup....there is nothing I'd have to change to get it
like you said. You'll have to be more specific for me use what you said.

Hi

If you previous admin hardcoded your dns name - by this I assume you mean an
A HOST record existed pointing the FQDN of you notebook to a specific IP,
This being the case did he configure a DHCP reservation because without a
reservation providing the notebook the same IP the HOST record in DNS is
futile

I assume you have checked DHCP for a reservation because it "could" be
pointing to your old notebooks MAC if it was never updated

Also you can use the DNS MMC to view the zone files unless you find the txt
foramt easier

Regards

Simon
