Problems Browsing Domain

Hello Guys,

I am having problems with browsing on our AD2003 Domain .

Below is background on our setup

AD 2003 Domain

2 Domain Servers

The AD servers have WINS running on them as well. All the clients
have WIN entries and have enable Netbios over TCP/IP. I can map to machines
on the network with computer name without any problems ... but when i go to
browse the network, i don't see any machines besides the one I'm on. Both
my AD2003 AD servers have the MaintainServerList set to false. Should I
set the value to True on the AD box that is the PDC emulator in the domain
? Is it safe to set the value to true on a Windows 2003 AD Server ?

Also, when I run NetBIOS Browsing Console in the domain it shoots
have that the PDC?Domian Master Browser : not found.

Hi Jo,

A setting of true on both machines is not much different
than a setting of false on both machines. This setting
doesn't guarantee a machine will act as the segment
master browser. The PDC emulator in your case will,
by default, act as the segment master browser. It also
has the role of domain master browser which is different
than an SMB. The SMB collects the local list and passes
on to the DMB as well as pass the fully merged list back
to clients that request it. This whole process relies on
NetBIOS so I would start by making sure NetBIOS isn't
being blocked by any type of software or hardware firewall
or being disabled.

Hello Michael,

I can do a net view \\computername and pull up the resources on the box.
But when I do a Nbtstat -r is shows 0 names resolved by the server. We are
not blocking netbios internally and it's enable on the boxes.

I'm sorry about the last post .... i put in the wrong key ... i meant it's
the IsDomainMaster that is set to false on both AD servers. Shouldn't the
PDC emulator have this set to true ? I was worried that setting this to
true on the PDC emulator box might cause problems. I'm thinking since both
have the value of false, it does not let either come up as the master
browser.

I recall the problems starting around the time we installed SP1 on the
2003 AD Servers ?

Hello ,

I have more information ...

When I run the browstat status command on a xp workstation I get back
that the XP workstation is the master browser .. with the AD PDC Emulatior
showing up as the backup server.

So I disable the Computer Browser on the PC and ran browstat status
Again and it then came up showing the AD PDC Emulatior as the Master
Browser and the same AD box as the backup. It also gave back the response
of

"Unable to retrieve server list"

Actually the setting on the PDC emulator should be false
as the rest of the machines on your network unless you
would like another machine besides the PDC emulator
to act as the segment master browser but that doesn't
guarentee that machine will be the SMB so it's better to
leave the default settings.

If that cures your issue it would take at least 51 minutes
for a full browse cycle. Have you checked the system
log in the event viewer on the PDC and workstations for
browse related errors? Is the PDC multihomed?

Hello Michael,

I went ahead and set the IsDomainMaster master to true ( trying things
for the heck of it) and below is what i get after i do a browstat status...
It shows no servers or domains in my list : (
( i used ....... instead of the real name )

Status for domain ........ on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{EFA6F46E-A951-42F1-9D5

Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: AD2003server
Master browser is running build 3790
1 backup servers retrieved from master AD2003server
\\AD2003server
There are 0 servers in domain ........ on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{EFA6F4

Hi Jo,

You changed the setting on the Emulator I assume? You
ran browstat on the same machine? What exactly do you
see when you run net view on that paticular machine? Which
machines show up in the list? Your network is not segmented?
You have have how many nodes? You are running tcp/ip and
DNS but not WINS?
