Problems with Belkin router

I just got a new laptop today, and we bought a router to have wireless
internet.
I'm totally new to all of this, so I have no idea what I'm doing. I
followed the instructions completely. Everthing is how it should be, the
internet on this desktop is working fine.
But my laptop isn't. It knows the router is there and it is
comunicating with it, but the router will not talk back, I have no idea
what to do.
