I'm with Virgin BB on the max 6GB capped service. Increasingly, the
service is very slow on evenings and weekends- almost unusable
sometimes. Is there any point switching provider, or will it be the same
problem? Anyone here on the central Manchester exchange with similar
problems. During weekdays, it's fine. When I did an online chat with
customer service, they suggested using the BT speedtester. I don't know
what that will achieve though- and it

Any advice on better providers (if available) welcome- I'm happy with
the price though (£18) and would just stick with this rather than pay a
lot more. I doubt I go above the 6GB cap- and certainly since signing up
with them in September haven't received any communication that I've
exceeded the usage. On weekdays, I can frequently get up to 6MB
downloads.

....is too slow to access properly at the moment from my end! (I meant
to add.)

Leaving Virgin.net was the best thing I ever did. The problem lies in
the fact that they are massively oversubscribed and just don't have the
capacity for all their users to be online at the same time, eg at
weekends and in the evening.

Thanks for the feedback. Forgive the ignorance of my question, but I
worry that the problem might be generally the number of broadband users
in the area (densely populated part of the city centre, lots of
apartment buildings.) I'd have no problem dumping them and incurring the
£50 charge if I could rely on a faster service. Even 2mb was absolutely
fine when I lived in the suburbs.

This site should tell you if the problem is on your exchange.

Don't think I've ever seen anyone with anything positive to say about
them since maxdsl was introduced.

Might be worth checking (www.samknows.com) to see if you could use some
other ISP like UK Online (it may be listed under "LLU") Many ISPs will
be using BT kit at the exchange but using some LLU service will mean a
connection is independent of BT Wholesale at your exchange at least.
(Unfortunately, where I am, the only 'other' service is from Bulldog,
now part of Pipex, so I cannot try UK Online or others at present).

The site doesn't tell me anything, really. What should I be looking for?

Have you put your phone number in to it?

Yes, but I don't understand what the output means. It indicates I'm fine
for 8MB, but I knew that already...
