Problem with wireless laptop

Hello to the group,

I have an HP n5470 Pavillion laptop using a Robanton PCMCIA wireless card.
In my travels I use the lapper for accessing HotSpots. When I get home and
try to connect to my wireless network it will not connect.

On the road I drop my encryption settings to use the HotSpots. I never have
a problems with them. When I get home, I reset my encryption and then
survey for my access point and "submit" to it. I then start up IE 6 and
wait while I get a message that says "detecting proxy settings." Then after
a short span I get the "cannot find server or DNS error."

I have looked into the IE 6 tools option and under LAN settings it is
checked for "automatically detect settings." I have gone into "winipcfg"
and it too is set to automatically detect settings and no proxy server is
selected.

So I don't know what is going on with this. In the past I have used the ME
restore function to bring me back to a known time where the home network was
okay with the lapper. However when I use Restore it then causes a problem
with Norton anti-virus which requires me to go to their site via another
machine and download a fix. I don't want to go through that again. I guess
going back to a previous date conflicts with the subscription dates that are
embedded in the program. Also using Restore loses a lot of data that has
accumulated after those dates.

If anyone could give me an idea of how to get around this problem I would
greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your help.

I have you checked the IP that the computer is using when you have this DNS
error, by using IPCONFIG /all at the Command Prompt? Because if the machine
is getting an IP that starts with a 169.xxx number, it's a default IP that
is being assigned when the machine has had trouble obtaining a valid IP that
will allow the machine to access the Internet. The 169.xxx number is not a
valid IP that can be used to access the Internet.

If this is the case of the 169.xxx number being assigned, then there are
other solutions other than having to do a system restore.

1) You can try turning the machine on and off doing a reboot to see if it
will obtain a valid IP

2) You can try issuing IPCONFIG /Release and IPCONFIG /renew at the command
prompt to see if the machine can obtain a valid IP.

3) You can use the utility below.

http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html

5) If all else fails and the 169.xxx number will not be released by the O/S
or you cannot access the Internet, then you can take five minutes and
rebuild the TCP/IP stack on the machine by using REGEDIT.

a) go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
b) delete the Winsock and Winsock2 entries
c) go to the NIC's Property Box and uninstall all services and protocols
d) reboot the machine which will rebuild the Stack
4) install the services and protocols back in the NIC's Property Box.

Hopefully, one of the solutions will get you out of the situation.

Uncheck "automatically detect settings"
That slows you done a bunch.

Thank you Duane and Len for your comments and advice.

I tried everything mentioned but unfortunately the problem still persists.
Duane, I could not budge the IP from the 169.xxx with the wireless PCMCIA
card. I used the program you gave the link to and I had a problem with
Norton stating that TCP/IP was not installed. When I tried restoring the
registry per the file it was saved in by the Winsock program, it would not
restore. I had to use a boot disk in DOS and go back to a registry saved
from a month ago to get the machine back to where it was with the current
problem. I have decided to do away with Windows ME and go to XP Corporate
as it has superior networking capabilities.

Again gentlemen, thank your for taking the time to help me out.
