Problem with Windows update with TalkTalk router

Continuing with my problems of connecting a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop
running XP to TalkTalk via a (Huawei) HG520s wireless router...

I can now connect in WPA2 AES mode and surf wirelessly.

My remaining problem is that Windows Update (and download of any
Microsoft patch) fails with this router. I get an error code
80072EE2.
I'm attributing this problem to the router because Windows Update
works fine when using the laptop with another (wired) router. I have
disabled the firewall on the wireless router but that makes no
difference and, I think, is irrelevant because Windows Update does
not
push from Microsoft's end. Only thing I can think of is that there
are
many lost packets causing the downloads to fail but I have no
evidence for this.

Any suggestions please?

I think it is time to give up on this router. I would welcome a
recommendation for a budget wireless router from a well-known
manufacturer. Nothing fancy, just need a single Ethernet connection
and WPA2 wireless.

David

Two things you can try:

1. Rename C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution to
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution.old
Then try Windows Update again.

2. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941

I use a Xyzel or Zyxel from PC World. About £40 and includes a USB
WiFi dongle and use WPA2/AES.

Hi Digby

Thanks for your reply. The crucial point for me is that Windows Update
works with my other modem, but not with the wireless router. Does this
indicate a router problem?

(The laptop is a brand new Dell and so Windows update should be
working ok).

it may indicate an MTU problem in the router - set it to 1500 or set
the PC to a lower value if your ISP requires this.

TalkTalk seem particularly challenged in this area - get DrTCP.exe and
set the PC MTU to 1400 on the interface concerned and see if that
helps.

ROFL. Try telling that to the guy whose £1800 Dell wouldn't connect o
the internet for 6 weeks :-)

It may also be worth checking that your router is not blocking ICMP, as
this will break PMTUD (Path MTU Discovery).

I changed the router's MTU value from its default (actual value is not
shown) to 1440 and that fixed the problem! Thank you very much - I'm
very grateful for your suggestion. I was about to give up.

Thanks also to everyone else who replied.
