Problem with uploading web pages

My friend is trying to upload (ftp) his web pages onto the PlusNet site,
but he can't. It tells him that permission is denied. The Plusnet people
have tested the site by putting a file in it, and that works. He wants
me to ask you if you have any ideas ? He feels there is a simple
'switch' somewhere that he needs to alter.

He's using a D-Link DSL-604+ router/modem, and WS_FTP as the upload
programme, and NT4 as the OS.

I know nothing about PlusNet but if presented with such a problem
would tackle it this way.

There would undoubtedly be some kind of home page so use of browser to
view it and from the properties of the file find its name; almost
certain to be index.html

Using WS_FTP connect and go up and down the directories until you find
the name of this file. Download the file onto your PC and see if it
is the same file that you were viewing when connected to the Internet,
albeit that your local copy will not show any images. If not repeat
these steps until you have success..

Go back to WS_FTP and navigate to the same area that the file was
found in. If you were trying to over write that file ensure the
pertmissions are set for write access, if not then make the change.
You can then upload the same file name from your PC onto the server.

New file names should upload OK but if they don't then see if you can
create a folder[directory], if you can't do that then go up one level
and view the log from which you will be able to determine the path to
the directory you are currently in, might be just / or perhaps /web

Then ask Plusnet which directory you should navigate to from your
current position to load your files.

My explaination may be poor but I hope that you can carry out these
diagnostic tests and know how to make any necessary changes.

Plusnet currently have a problem with their disk cluster which is affecting
read \ write (i.e. email, ftp, homepages, usenet.... etc). This is due to
be upgraded on magic 22nd. At the momenet access is simply slow and there
are lots of errors particuarly at busy times. Plusnet seem to have made
efforts to decrease overheads caused by unessasary traffic (such as turning
web space level monitoring off) but basically its stuggle on until the
upgrade at the moment.

Critical pages uploaded singuarly should work eventually, tell him to try at
a less busy time, i'd leave big uploads until after the upgrade though.

Also plusnet.service.customer-feedback is the place to go for plusnet help,
or stick [Plusnet] in the subject header and they will probably pick it up
in here - you can't expect support to do through each thread though.

Sam.
My friend Graham has replied to your above post by first of all thanking
you and then he says:-

"I have noticed the slow speeds - they even have comments on it in their
service section.

I've been playing around with the settings over the w/e, and
re-configured my web pages. It seems that the Plusnet system is much
more case sensitive than the ISP I was using previously. Also, a part of
the instructions given by Plusnet on how to upload were not accurate. I
have now been able to upload my pages".

End of quote.

Needless to say its "double Dutch" to be but if you or anyone have any
comments on his experience related above I will pass them on to him.

Thanks again,
