Problem with three switches connected in a chain

I have a home network with the WAN side originating at a DSL
router/switch intergrated box.
This box is connected to a switch sitting in the basement, using a
single cat5e cable. Multiple computers are connected to this switches
directly and these all works
>From this switch, using a single cable I m trying to connect yet

another switch and attach a print server and a computer.
When I connect the computer to this switch, I can see that it's network
becomes very slow. It manages to get a dynamic IP assigned to it but it
takes minutes to fetch a web page. ( including the one from the
router/switch box.

But if I remove the switch from the end and connect the computer
directly, it works fine.
Im running Fedora 2, though I tried this with the other Operating
System too.
Can somebody suggest a solution.

What kind of switches (mfr/model)? Is either or both autosensing as far
as cable type (ie, do not have uplink switch or port)?

If they are NOT autosensing, you either need to have an uplink port on one
connected to non-uplink port on other switch with standard patch cable, or
regular port to regular port connected with "crossover" cable. If either
has a separate uplink port instead of uplink switch for a regular port,
the adjacent regular port related to the uplink port cannot be used.

Thanks David:
I had in fact checked this possibility. Both are D-Link DSS-5+ model
switches. One is auto sensing and the other is not( older model ).
I even tried swapping them.
The one that was not autosensing has been connected and has been
working perfectly for the past 2 years, serving a single computer in
the location where Im adding this new switch now.
Actually all Im trying to do is to add a network printer next to this
computer.

Thanks again

Check your cables, to make sure they're wired correctly. What happens if
you move the computer closer to the DSL router?

IMO using consumer equipment in any configuration that isn't shown on
the box is asking for trouble. Three, or even 2, switches
back-to-back falls into this catagory. Mixing vendors makes this even
less viable.

Even if it worked the day you wire it up, it makes troubleshooting
much more complicated if things stop working later. This isn't a big
deal for a home network but I cringe when I see something like this in
a business.

Don't blame me. I voted for Gore.

What does the error count look like? Even 1% error gives TCP serious
indigestion.
