Problem with shared printer

I don't have enough hair left to tear out any more..........maybe you
can help me keep what little remains........

I have a W2K desktop system with a Netgear DGB34G router. Connected
via USB is an Epson RX520. I'm trying to get a laptop running Vista
Home Premium to print with no success, although an XP laptop has no
problems.

The Vista laptop keeps asking for an updated printer driver, although
I've installed all updated drivers both in the desktop and the Vista
laptop.

The wireless connection between the Vista laptop and the rest of the
network is fine - everything sees everything else and I can surf the
interweb from the Vista machine with no problems.

Is this an example of Vista incompatibility, user stupidity or
something else?

I've searched as much as I can elsewhere but I can't find anything
else useful to try.

Many TIA.

Steve.

Hi Steve

This is what I did when trying to connect different flavours of
Windows OS to co-operate before with my HP printer. I 'installed
additional drivers' on the computer to which the printer was
physically attached.

For some bizarre reason, even though I had the right drivers installed
on the right machines, it wouldn't let me print until after I'd done
this.

So I suggest that you 'install additional drivers' on the win2k box
and this is how you do it ...

Start - Settings - Printers & Faxes

Right click on your printer and select 'sharing ...'

Towards the bottom of that window, you'll see a section on Drivers and
a button to press to install additional drivers and then it offers you
a selection of additional drivers that are available.

I see that you've put the updated drivers on both computers so Vista
should appear as one of the options. If it doesn't then I'm stumped,
sorry.

There is an alternative. Does your printer have a network card? If
so, you could attach it as a network device direct to the router.

Many thanks Brian.

Like a lot of this stuff it tends to be intuitive but with a
combination of installing additional drivers and blind luck* I've now
managed to get everything "seeing" everything else and I can now even
print from both laptops - one Vista and one XP (a different one and
one that stubbornly refused to print!).

*I have a feeling that some of the problem may have been the rather
unobvious interface Vista has when dealing with workgroup computers
and my inability to understand it.

Whatever, it's all working now - which is the main thing.

Many thanks again.

Steve.
