I have a problem with a 98 PC. This PC plus software was provided by a
software house to run a specific application which has been i operation for
4/5 years. The software has been extended but now requires a connection to
the internet.
I tried to create and account with the ISP I have used on many occasions in
the past. The difference with this one is that very shortly into the
install it is requested that the system is reloaded, something I’m sure never
occurred in the past. The main problem now is that during the restart a
pop-up window displays requesting a sign on password, something that has
never been used with this system for the 4 years since the implementation.
I can get past this by pressing cancel but then I cannot carry on with the
completion of the account creation with the ISP which demands the password.
I have spoken to the software house who unfortunately were not much help.
However, they did say that the PC was not necessarily a new PC which makes me
think that it may have been a networked PC and some of the 98 network
features were still there.
At the point of requesting the password the Network components installed are
Client for Microsoft Windows, Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP and below in the
Primary network logon shows two options – Family logon and Windows Logon.
None of these were present before the attempt to connect as far as I am
aware.
I have removed these components to get me back to normal operation. However
I would appreciate any suggestions/advice anyone may have to avoid the
password pop-up.
