Hi I'm totally new to networking and I'm trying to set up an FTP
server on win XP pro in my home. I have installed the IIS services and
managed to get a local ftp site up and running well at ftp://192.168.1.34.
No matter what I try, I can't seem to access this site from the
outside of my home network.

The computer hosting the ftp site conects through a zyxel Prestige
660HW-61 wifi router. I've set a
"NAT - SUA/NAT Server Set " from port 21 to the local IP address
192.168.1.34 and locked the computers mac address to this static IP so
it wont change. I've disabled the firewall on both the router and the
pc (just for testing). When I visit the url ftp://username@myipaddress
firefox prompts me for login details and then does nothing (appears to
load) until I hit stop on the browser. IE just returns a 404.

Can someone please let me know what I need to do to make it work?
Thanks,
Ciarán

Do a simple test. Can you telnet port 21 from outside?

Hi Robert, thanks for the response - opened command.exe and typed
telnet 192.168.1.34 21
...and got a response: "220 Microsoft FTP service" then my custom
welcome message set in the ftp settings. Then I quit out of it and
tried:
telnet (myIPaddress) 21 (I'm not sure if its safe to post my IP to
the newsgroup)
... This time I got this response: "220 FTP version 1.0 ready at (date
& time)"

What does this mean?
Cheers,
Ciarán

Did you try to connect from your own computer or as Robert said from
one outside you firewall? If you're inside you'll get a connection.

I connected from another computer on the network but I ran telnet on
my main IP address, not the local one.

OK this time using the telnet client on a vista laptop outside the
network, I entered open (myIPaddress) 21 and connected!
I also tried it in a browser and it works too! It seems to be blocked
when the request is coming from inside my network. Is that common?

One other question: What's the best way to secure my new site? should
I only allow anonymous connections or anything like that?

Thanks for the help guys - I'm delighted with this!
Ciarán

I'm still having aweful trouble with this. I've managed to connect and
log in using telnet on an externel machine but neither the browser nor
any of my ftp programs can get through the apssword check even tho I
am using the exact details I set up the server. I've also tried
username@ip as the username without success.
Can anyone shed some light on the situation please?
I'm actually downloading a bit of software called serv-U now to see if
that's any easier than this!
thanks
Ciarán
