I recently purchased a laptop and my husband set up the wireless router in
our home (linsky's). However, the problem is he didn't secure the network.
He had network authentication set for open and data encryption disabled.
Upon trying to go in "Wireless Network Connection Properties", clicking on my
network (Linskys properties) and change the network authentication to WPA or
WPA-PSK, I always encounter a problem. It never applies. I'm able to make
the adjustments I want to secure my network, but once I check to see if this
change has been made, I still see that my network is unsecure. When I go
back in, I see that my changes are no longer there and it has reverted back
to the old settings. I'm able to see all the neighbor's secured connections,
but I just can't get mine to work. I don't know much about this, but I am
extremly frustrated at this point. Please help. I've read the information
on this site about setting up a secure network, but nothing works. Thanks

First You're comming at this the wrong way.
You have to set the router's settings to add the security... find you
instruction manual for the router.. it should tell you how to log in to
it... generally you go to http://192.168.1.1 it may be ".2.1".... whatever
your "gateway" is in the connection status, under the support tab.
find your way through the "web" based administration, and set up your
security... you'll probably best to use WEP security... common and easy to
set for home use.
now once you set the authentication password remember it! because you wont
be able to get back there unless you reset the router completely!
now when you see your linksys router in the wireless list, it should be
secured!, now try and connect... it should ask for the key, enter it in..
and you're secure! It will remember it now.
