problem running smartlink modem driver deamon (slmodemd)

I am using smartlik modem driver to access the internal modem on IBM
Thinkpad 40e. running SuSE 9.1.

When I start the deamon with:

$ /etc/init.d/slmodemd start

The deamon dies with an exit code of 255

What is going wrong?
