At around 11am today my system disconnected from the great outside world,
otherwise known as the internet.
I am using what used to be Freeserve, then it was Wanadoo, now I think
it's Orange, so the problems aren't unexpected given my experiences with
their mobile network, but that's another story.
I checked all my settings and nothing had changed (previously the
modem/router had been up for something like 3 months without a reboot) so
I bit the bullet and called the ripoff 0870 number and eventually got
someone in India, judging by her accent.
I asked if there were any known problems, she said no but BT have had some
outages (pass the buck..!) but I asked her to check anyway. She asked what
errors if any I was receiving, and I said that I was receiving PPPoE
timeout errors. She said you should be using PPPoA which I already knew,
and that the modem was set to detect PPPoA/PPPoE automatically anyway. She
suggested trying a manual configuration to use PPPoA so I tried this but
at the same time the system came back up by itself (after I'd spent 15
minutes on the phone at 0870 rates..) so I left it there.
All was ok until about an hour ago (1530) when it went off again with the
same error, and returned after 40 minutes or so without me doing anything.
Anyone else had similar problems..? Is it FS/W/Orange (or whatever they're
called this week) or is it BT..?
