Problem with new Netgear DG814 on BT Openworld

Bought and installed a Netgear DG814 router/modem for the office last week,
to replace the USB Intel ADSL modem BT originally supplied. We've been using
broadband and this modem for about 18 to 24 months now, with *very* few
problems.

I have a cable router and small LAN at home, so didn't expect any problems I
couldn't really handle.

After uninstalling the Intel USB modem, it made a real mess of the TCP/IP
drivers in Windows 98, and simply re-installing the protocols didn't fix it,
so I decided to reinstall the OS from scratch.

With a clean OS, I installed the router, and set it up, trying to match all
equivalent settings with that of the previous Intel modem. Everything seemed
to go well. The DG814 dialled into BT no problem. Successfully connected,
established an upload/download rate (same speeds as always) and Internet
Explorer appeared to see the internet ok.

So, I began to bring the other three PCs online and test their connection.
They each saw the internet, so I assumed all was well.

After trying to surf for a while, it was apparent that, while the machines
could all access the internet, it was like using a 2400 baud modem...
completely unusable.

I've tried changing cables, isolating use to just one machine, rebooting the
router, upgrading the router to v4.8 firmware.... all to no avail.

Yesterday, I finally decided to re-install the Intel modem, turn off the
router and test the connection this way. All seemed fine again! Surfing
appeared ok. Tried a good many sites... no problems.

This morning, before turning anything on, I decided to start the day with
the router. So, I switched on the DG814 and booted up my machine. Tested the
internet.... all seemed perfect(!?). Nice, relatively speedy access. For at
least 20 minutes.... then.... suddenly... back 2400 baud emulation...

I am stumped!

Has anyone seen this before? What is upsetting this router? Why does the
speed seem fine for 20 minutes? And then this?

I am very grateful for any further advice.

Is the firmware v4.8 or later?

Yes, I upgraded from v4.4 to v4.8 as soon as I noticed a problem (after
reading Netgear's site).

No effect :-(
