Hi guys,

I would like to network together my Win Me desktop and My Win XP
Laptop, the problem I have is that I am completely new to this and haven't
got a clue how to do it. Both machines have onboard Ethernet ports and I've
bought the cable to go between the 2. Assuming that I have to set one up as
a server, I would prefer it to be the ME machine. Can anyone explain to me
how to do this, or do you know
of a downloadable step by step guide anywhere.

Many thanks
Matt

Hello Matt;
I would recommend that you start here;
http://www.bcmaven.com/networking/faq.htm, which is Steve
Winograd's networking website.
I realize this is a lot of reading for you to do. However,
in the long run, I believe, it will save you frustration.

Make sure that your cable is a crossover Ethernet cable. A regular
Ethernet cable won't work to connect two computers' Ethernet ports
directly to each other.

The rest is easy: run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers,
which will make all the necessary network settings:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...rksetupwiz.htm

You don't need to set either computer up as a server.
