Problem with Network Win98 <-> WinXPhome

Hi all,

first of all, I really think, that this is a Win98 and not a WinXP problem.

I had a fine working mini-network with the following configuration:

INTERNET
|
Win98-PC --- (cable) --- ROUTER ··· (wireless) ··· WinXPhome-Notebook
|
Printer

It worked all fine, i.e., I could shares all drives from PC to NB and vice
versa and could share also the PC-printer with the NB, and, not really
important question here, had full access to the Internet from both
machines.

Now I just removed the firewall software from both PCs resp. switched off
the WinXP-Firewall.

What now happens is, that the XP-NB no longer can access anything on the
Win98-machine, neither file-shares nor the printer. Not even a PING work.

On the ohter hand a PING from Win98 to XP works, but the only way to map a
XP-share is from the DOS-Shell using NET USE...

Additionally to mention: When I use the Explorer on the XP-NB, then I can
click down \My Network Places\Entire Network\Microsoft Windows
Network\Workgrp\\Win98PC. When I then double-click the Win98PC I get the
hourglass for about 10 seconds and then the following error message:
\\Win98PC ist not accessible. You micht not have permission....

As I mentionen above, both PCs are still within the same workgroup and I
haven't change any username or password.

Now I am REALLY at a loss. What can I do or where should I have a look at?

Thanks, OSKAR

What firewall program was on each computer? ZoneAlarm sometimes
causes problems when you un-install it because it leaves bits of
itself behind. Other firewalls might, too.

On each computer go to Start > Run > msconfig and disable (un-check)
any remnants of the firewall, such as ZA's TrueVector service, in the
Startup (XP and 98) and Services (XP only) tabs.

If that doesn't solve the problem, download and run this program on
each computer:

LSP-Fix

On the 98 machine really was something pointing to Kerio Personal Firewall,
also this file does not exist. Anyway, I disabled it.

Nothing suspicious on the XP machine.

Found nothing on both machines.

Still behaviour as in my OP :-(

did you try the LSP-Fix as suggested ?

since uninstalling some firewalls can mess with your system ..

verify NIC drivers are not corrupt ....remove references for the NIC in safe
mode under device manager , then reboot an reinstall drivers

I not that expert. Could be please specify what you mean by 'NIC driver'?

As mentioned everything works fine, e.g., Internet, mapping shares on the
XP-computer. Just the other way does not work, i.e. the Win98 seems to be
nearly invisible, so that a PING to it dows not work and also mapping
shares or a printer, that is mapped to the PC.
The only curious thing is that the XP machine can identify Win98-PC when do
a NET VIEW.

again ,did you try the LSP-Fix as suggested ?

NIC is your network card (Network Interface Controller) ...do you know how
to get into safe mode to remove this ?

at boot time ..tapping F8 (or ctrl) should bring up a menu for you to select
safemode.in device manager go to network adapters and delete all references
their .

Windows should reload the drivers on next bootup (but try the LSP-fix
first!)

OK. I got the latest driver version of the network adapter and installed
it. Behaviour as before :-(

Here's the LSP-Fix result:

No problems found.

Under advanced are 4 files, that I could remove (what I do not dare to do).
Here is the list of files and their description:

rnr20.dll DNS Name Space Provider.
msafd.dll (Protocol handler)
rsvpsp.dll (Protocol handler)
mswsosp.dll (Protocol handler)

Network adapter drivers removed and newest version installed (BTW Safe Mode
is done with CTRL on my PC).

'crap' which leads you back to a remnant of a firewall is most likely
messing with the system.

I would try installing Kerio again then removing it ....sounds to me like a
failed uninstall of that firewall (or possibly another you have installed
since)
